22 WMR AMMO

22 WMR Ammo | Fast Shipping On Bulk .22 Mag Ammo

The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) is a popular choice among small game hunters and target shooters. It has long been considered one of the most powerful rimfire rounds, though newer cartridges like the .17 Winchester Super Magnum (WSM) have surpassed it in velocity and energy. Developed by Winchester in 1959, the .22 WMR offers superior performance compared to other rimfire cartridges, making it a versatile and potent option for various shooting activities.

Here are our picks for these caliber at Pro Armory!

What is .22 WMR?

The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) is a rimfire cartridge introduced by Winchester in 1959. It is also known as the .22 Magnum, .22 WMRF, .22 MRF, or .22 Mag. The .22 WMR is a more powerful evolution of the .22 Winchester Rimfire (WRF) and is designed for small game hunting and varmint control. While the .22 WRF can be fired in most .22 WMR firearms, the .22 WMR cannot be safely fired in a .22 WRF chamber due to its longer case and higher pressure. The .22 WMR is a popular choice among hunters and shooters due to its high velocities, flat trajectory, and effective range.

.22 Mag Specs & Velocity

The .22 Mag is a rimfire cartridge with a case diameter of 0.242 inches and an overall length of 1.055 inches. It has a rim diameter of 0.294 inches and a bullet diameter of 0.224 inches.

  • Standard 40-grain FMJ or JHP loads have a muzzle velocity of approximately 1,875–1,910 feet per second (571–582 m/s) from a rifle barrel. Some premium loads can approach 2,000 fps (610 m/s).
  • 30-grain V-MAX or JHP rounds reach around 2,200–2,250 fps (670–685 m/s).
  • 50-grain bullets generally have a lower muzzle velocity, averaging 1,530–1,550 fps (466–472 m/s).

The .22 WMR offers a significant velocity and energy advantage over the .22 Long Rifle (LR), making it effective for small game, varmint control, and medium-sized predators at distances up to 125–150 yards.

Comparison to .22 LR

The .22 Long Rifle (LR) is a widely used rimfire cartridge that dates back to 1884. While it is affordable and effective for many applications, it has lower velocity, less energy, and a shorter effective range compared to the .22 WMR.

  • A typical 40-grain .22 LR bullet has a velocity between 1,070–1,250 fps (326–381 m/s).
  • In comparison, .22 WMR 40-grain bullets travel at 1,875–1,910 fps (571–582 m/s)—nearly double the velocity.
  • The effective range of .22 LR is typically 50–75 yards, while .22 WMR can be effective at 125–150 yards.

The .22 LR remains the most affordable and widely available rimfire cartridge, but for hunters and varmint control, the .22 WMR offers significantly greater stopping power and range.

What Are The Different Types of .22 Mag Ammo?

The two most common types of .22 Mag ammo are full metal jacket or (FMJ)  and Jacketed Hollow Points or JHP.

Full Metal Jacket (FMJ): A FMJ bullet has a metal jacket that covers the lead core and unlike a hollow point bullet, FMJ is not designed to expand upon impact.

FMJ rounds are typically used for range training or target practice.

Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP): A JHP bullet generates more force and does expand on impact. Jacketed Hollow Points are intended for self-defense use because of the increased expansion and penetration upon impact.

There are also several other types of .22 Mag ammo, including:

Lead Round Nose (LRN): A LRN bullet has a lead core and a rounded nose and is cheaper than full metal jacket or JHP rounds. The reason most shooters choose a lead round nose is because it's cheaper than FMJ.

Some ranges do not allow lead ammo.
