Level IIA
Usually lightweight and easy to conceal, this soft armor offers the lowest protection. Can protect against small handgun calibers like .32 ACP and .38 Special up to .40 Smith & Wesson.
Level II
Can protect you from five shots of .357 magnum and 9mm bullets. Lightweight and concealable, but bulkier than Level IIA. Level II armor is a great choice for moderate protection if you’re not expecting any surprises.
Level IIIA
This level of armor will defeat up to 5 shots from calibers up to .44 Magnum. Commonly used by law enforcement since it can protect you from most handgun rounds. The next time a loose cannon cop who doesn’t play by the rules menaces you with his Model 29, tell him you don’t need to feel lucky — you have Level IIIA plates.
Level III
Offers significant protection from high-powered rifles. Can protect you from rifle rounds up to 7.62x51 NATO. Commonly worn by military personnel on patrols. With Level III NIJ armor, you need not fear any sniper.
Level IV
If you’re going into a warzone, you’ll want Level IV plates. These can protect you from a single shot of armor-piercing .30-caliber rifle ammo. So go ahead, take that steel core 30-06 to the chest — just make sure you don’t get hit in the same place more than once.
