From Humble Beginnings to Elite Performance: The Rise of the 6.5 Creedmoor
The 6.5 Creedmoor had humble beginnings, but was brought to the public thanks to Senior Ballistics Scientist Dave Emary and Vice President of product development Dennis DeMille at Creedmoor Sports. The sectional density and energy retention keep this bullet flying fast, hard, and free. The performance of the 6.5 didn’t go unnoticed. It was put through a gauntlet of tests and a battery of trials and won the U.S. SOCOM’s favor over Remington.
In 2019, the Special Forces wanted their sniper rifles re-chambered for the 6.5 quickly. This is where the 6.5 Creedmoor proved to be incredibly versatile as well — it only required a swap of a barrel to rechamber a M110 sniper system and Mk20 sniper rifle to take 6.5. Thanks to the superior ballistics and stopping power offered by the 6.5, the Special Forces were able to easily switch over and likely won’t be changing their minds any time soon.
As of 2023, the 6.5 Creedmoor is still gaining traction. The Special Forces are also heavily considering using this round for their light machine guns (LMGs), battle/assault rifles, and more sniper models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any weapon chambered for the 6.5 Creedmoor will work just fine. This includes the SCAR, Henry Long Ranger, Springfield Waypoint, Sig Sauer CROSS, and more. However, as mentioned, some weapons are easily adapted by simply switching the barrels. Check with your manufacturer and see if you can safely convert. Do not mix barrels with calibers not designed for them. That’s the wrong kind of bang for your buck.
Yes. However, results between manufacturers (cartridges, bullets, primers, etc.) have had mixed results. For example, experts say using Lapua brass has approximately the integrity of 12-20 reloads. But using their smaller primers in Hornady cartridges can cause the primers to be a one-time deal, as Hornady uses large primers. Hornady has since addressed this complaint about their powder loads causing redundancy of handloading. Their powder loads were blowing primers at 62,000 psi, but they have since adjusted. Heed all safety guidelines and best common practices when reloading any round.
